Raising a Pasture-Based Sheep Flock at CFR Farms

We’re building our sheep flock the same way we build everything at CFR Farms — on open pasture, at a scale we can manage responsibly. Starting with 50 sheep, we’re growing the flock to 500 by the end of the year, sending 26 to the butcher every month while replacing the flock with new lambs.

The goal is simple: a steady, sustainable cycle that keeps fresh lamb available year-round without ever overextending the flock beyond what our pasture can support.

Beyond meat, our sheep operation produces wool, milk, and tallow — and their grazing habits do double duty maintaining healthy pasture across the farm, supporting every other part of our operation.

Scaling the Flock Responsibly

Growing from 50 to 500 sheep in a single year is an ambitious target, and one we’re approaching in phases rather than all at once. As a new operation, we’re prioritizing operational stability and quality control at every stage of growth, expanding the flock only as fast as our pasture, infrastructure, and processing capacity can support.

Balancing a Diverse Product Line

Wool, milk, tallow, and meat each require different handling, storage, and processing. Managing this range of products alongside the rest of our livestock and produce lines means staying disciplined about where we focus first, prioritizing our most popular products while we build out the systems to support everything else.

Sheep are one of the most versatile animals on the farm, and getting the balance right between meat, wool, and dairy production is part of building a resilient, diversified operation for the long term.
